Music and dance concerts

The 26th anniversary of International Dance Alliance (IDA) will be celebrated on August 3 and 4 at Narada Gana Sabha’s main auditorium.
Senior dancers from all over India and abroad are participating in the festival.
This year IDA will honour two gurus – Lakshmi Viswanathan and Krishnakumari Narendran.
Dr. N. Mahalingam presides over the function.
The programme will feature 12 dance presentations featuring – Vidhya Subramanian, Samyuktha Narayan and Navia Natarajan; Vaishnavi, Krithika and Manasvini – choreographed by Rajeswari Sainath; Sulakshana Jayaram; Urmila Satyanarayanan; Swarnamalya Ganesh; Archana Narayanamoorthy, Murugashankari, Sridharini and Aarabhi – choreographed by Pandanallur Pandian; S.Madhusudhanan and all male group; Prof.Sailaja; Smitha Madhav and Prithiviraj Ramaswamy; Gopika Varma; Ramita Ravi; ABHAI members – Roja Kannan, Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, Priya Murle, Gayathri Kannan, Sivakumar and Shailaja Sivakumar – choreographed by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam.

In an effort to revive the art of pallavi singing in all its glory, Carnatica and Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha have joined hands to present a unique music festival Pallavi Durbar 2011 on August 4, 5 and 6 at the Mylapore Fine Arts Club.
The festival is dedicated to exploring the various facets of Ragam-Thanam-Pallavi, which is considered the pinnacle of manodharma sangitam (creative music) in the Carnatic tradition. The series will feature stalwarts such as Suguna Purushotthaman, Gayathri Girish and Panthula Rama, young virtuoso Abhishek Raghuram, overseas talents Sandeep Narayan and Ramakrishna Murthy, and talented young musicians Sumithra Vasudev and V. Shankaranarayanan.
The festival is dedicated to the memory of maestro Chengalpet Ranganathan, who was himself a doyen of pallavi singing, and participated in last year’s Pallavi Darbar.
A tribute to the vidwan will be offered on the inaugural day of the festival by P. S. Narayanaswamy.

There will be a flute concert by Amirthakatesh accompanied by Parur M. K. Anathalakshmi on violin and Sivasankar on mridangam on July 31 at 7 a.m. at the Chennai Corporation Park, Fifth Cross Street, C I T Colony, Mylapore. This is part of the “Music in the Park” monthly programme. All are welcome.

The “Mylapore Trio” and the members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation is organising 65th “Kala Poshakam” (monthly concerts in classical dance, music, instruments and other art forms).
It will start at 5.30 p.m. on July 31 at Narada Gana Sabha, Mini Hall, TTK Road, Alwarpet. All are requested to come dressed in traditional attire.

Vocalist Charulatha Mani will present “Isai Sangamam with Charulatha Mani” on August 7 at 6.15 p.m. at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore.
The artiste will present an ensemble of classical songs as well as devotional film songs in various ragas.
Music director James Vasanthan will be the chief guest. The concert is hosted by Isai Payanam Trust in association with Arun Excello Pvt. Ltd.  This is open to all.
