Rusty mortar shell found on San Thome coast

Youths of Nochikuppam, a fishers community in San Thome found an unexploded mortar on the sandy shore behind the San Thome Cathedral on Monday evening ( June 25).

They reported this to the Light House Police Station in the same area and the ammunition was sent to the Bond Detection and Disposal Squad of the TN Police.

It appears that the rusty mortar must have been caught in the nets of local fishermen who put out to sea and must have been  thrown off on the shore. The boys who were playing here came across it by accident.

Traditional fishermen form a sizable community on the coast of San Thome. They have gone back to sea recently after a break which was part of the seasonal ban on fishing during the fish breeding season.
