QMC centenary event; students, alumni to present music-based programs

Queen Marys College is all set to celebrate its 100 years.  The first of the many events is on July 14 with the state education minister and other VIPs taking part in the formal event that morning. Students and alumni are invited to take part. A meeting of OSA and the staff of QMC headed by the new principal Dr. Akthar Begam was held Tuesday to outline the plans ahead. It was announced that the Government has sanctioned new buildings for the college.  Similarly OSA (Old Students Assn.) said it had got permission to construct a Commemoration Pillar inside the campus. The centenary programme will start with a prayer by students and the lighting of 100 lamps at 9 a.m..  The welcome address will be by the Principal Dr. Akthar Begam followed by the release of ‘My Stamp’ by the chief guest, Education Minister P. Palaniappan.

The first copy will be received by the nonagenarian alumna and ex-Principal, K.Jagadambal. 100 sapplings will be planted inside the campus.  100 balloons with QMC 100 printed on them will be flown. Groups will sing the Centenary Song ‘Rise Rise Queen Marian’.

A huge cake with the topping QMC 100 will be cut and distributed. Cultural programme to start from 10.30a.m. and extend till 1.30 in the afternoon. Senior/popular alumnae of Music Department are taking part and rendering classical and light classical music Senior musician Kanyakumari will render a solo violin concert.

Group singing   of popular Carnatic songs will be rendered by Charumathi Ramachandran, Dr. Hemalatha, Subha Ganesan, Subhashini Parthasarathi and a few others.  There is also going to be an orchestra group performance (Veena, Violin, Mandolin, etc) by the alumnae. Dr. Narmada will render classical film songs with her own orchestra. Vani Jayaram and Anuradha Sriram with other alumnae like Grace, Kalpana Kishore, Lalitha Jawahar and Devi will render light music along with orchestra. Students of QMC will also perform cultural programmes.
