World Music Day; Carnatic musicians make big plans for June 21

Carnatic musicians plan to let the music float all around us on June 21 – World Music Day ( it is also Yoga Day).

Musicians K N Shashikiran and Sudha Ragunathan who run Carnatica and Samudhyaa respectively are bringing together artistes to host a variety of acts.

The celebrations will be flagged off by Dr. R. Nataraj, MLA of Mylapore constituency along with Sudha Ragunathan and K.N. Shashikiran near Gandhi statue, Marina Beach at 6am.

As part of the morning event on the beach, yoga sessions will be conducted by the renowned yoga expert Venkataraman along with musicians and rasikas.

This will be followed by bhajans and a choir concert lead by Dr.Sudha Raja.

There will be music at several venues locally – at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore at 7am and at Dr. MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science at 10.30am.

The finale of the event will happen at the Mylapore Fine Arts Club from 5.30pm with performances by various popular and upcoming artistes. All are welcome to join in the yoga sessions. (Please bring your own yoga mats, says the hosts).

The  evening’s event will be presided over by Dr. R. Natraj, MLA, M.Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets and V V Sundaram of Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana.

The hosts will give away endowment awards to differently abled musicians. Veteran artists Guruvayur Durai(mridangam), Coimbatore S R Krishnamurthy(Vocal), Erode Nagaraj(Mridangam) and Gayathri Sankaran(vocal) will be honoured for their excellence.

Others to be decorated are morsing artiste Raman, audio & light technician Murugan, Ramesh of Kannan Sound Systems and mridangam manufacturer Johnson. The event is supported by Sri Krishna Sweets and Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha.

The event brings together some of the leading musicians in a unique Carnatic night  featuring the first-ever Carnatic Jam by female artistes led by vocalist Sudha Ragunathan and will take place at the Mylapore Fine Arts Club.

It will be divided into diverse sessions such as swara jam, raga, viruttam jam and laya jam. Carnatic Jam, organized by Carnatica has gained popularity and has been appreciated by many connoisseurs recently.

There will also be music and meditation sessions, wherein the audience learns to meditate using music as the medium.

Subhashree Thanikachalam will present Ragamalika – a classical, film and devotional music medley along with prominent playback singers and reality show stars.

The list of participating musicians includes Sudha Ragunathan, Gayathri Venkatraghavan, Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan, Dr. Sudha Raja’s Sargam Choir, Carnatica Brothers – K.N. Shashikiran & P. Ganesh, Tiruvarur Girish, Uma Shankar, Kunnakkudi M Balamuralikrishna, Trichur Brothers, Ramakrishnan Murthy, Subhashree Thanikachalam, Amritha Murali, G.Ravikiran, K. Bharat Sundar, Vishnudev Namboodiri, Ashwath Narayanan, Vignesh Ishwar, V Deepika, Anahita Ravindaran & Apoorva Ravindran along with several other leading accompanists and musicians.
