St. John’s Snr. 1996 batchmates have a get-together. Group funds social needs.

The 1996 batch of alumni of St.John’s Senior Secondary School in Mandaveli met up for a special party in late December.

The get-together was attended by 39 people and 15 members checked in online. There was also an online interaction with many past teachers of the school.

130 students passed out from St.John’s Senior in 1996. Close to 100 of them are in touch with each other, mainly due to the efforts taken by Bharani Subramanian, who is also the ‘admin’ for the Facebook and WhatsApp pages of this group.

The group floated a registered Trust in 2015 (it is called Child N U) mainly to cater to needy children.

Alumni Shyam Sunder says the Trust has supported 1500 children during the floods in Chennai in 2015.

“We also support the education of a few under privileged children every year, he adds.

During the severe floods in Kerala in 2018, the group arranged relief materials to children there and it reached out to affected children after cyclone Gaja hit coastal TN in 2018.

In 2019, after one of their batchmates passed away in a road accident, the alumni donated Rs.1.30 lakhs to support the education of the daughter of the deceased. In 2021, after one of the batchmates passed away due to Covid, the Trust raised a sum of Rs.3 lakhs to support the deceased woman’s son.
