Thousands of pilgrims walk their way to Besant Nagar church. They take the roads and streets in San Thome, Mylapore and Alwarpet

Thousands of people were seen walking on all the main roads that led to Besant Nagar this Tuesday, August 29.

They were on their way to the Annai Vailankkani Church in Besant Nagar where, around 6.30 pm, the flag hoisting service that launches the annual Annai Vailankkani Madha festival was held.

This fest culminates on Sept.8

The pilgrims, seniors, adults and children who take a vow to walk all the way to the shrine were seen on the Marina beach road, on C P Ramaswamy Road and on Greenways Road and they all merged alongside the Adyar river bridge to head towards Besant Nagar.

Though there were police on duty at some key junctions, residents of Alwarpet and Mandaveli said that the police were not to be seen in inner roads where the pilgrims were walking, and some driving down, leading to traffic jams.
