Pongal shopping: sugarcane arrives and the rest is limited in local market zones on Saturday

Local street markets are not really flooded with all that is needed for the Pongal festival celebrations.

An indication from what we saw on Saturday noontime in the markets of Myalpore’s South Mada Street, Mandaveli Street and what used to be the Thaneerthurai market zone of Royapettah High Road.

Thoranams and manjal saplings had arrived, coconuts were sold at some stalls and painted and ordinary mud pots were being sold off Mandaveli Street. Prices – Rs.200 to Rs.500 for various sizes of painted pots.

Thoranams in the Chitrakulam zone sold between Rs,30 and 50 for a set of two, depending on the size.

Manjal kotthu sold around Rs.50 and inji set at Rs.100.

Sugarcane was stocked in fairly good quantity off South Mada Street. Prices varied a lot.

Larger arrivals of all these were expected late Saturday night.
