Obit: V. Sundararajan, engineer, mentor and bommai maker

Vankeepuram Sundararajan of Abiramapuram passed away on April 2. He was 92 years old.

His family said he was a deeply religious Vaishnavite scholar, a connoisseur of Carnatic music, excellent engineer and mentor and a doll maker.

He graduated as the top scholar from Kakinada Engineering and was awarded the TATA scholarship to study at the famous Pen-state university to get a post graduate master’s degree.

He held senior positions in reputed institutions such as KGF (Kolar Gold Fields), BARC ( Baba Atomic
Research Center), and notably Dunlop India where as the head of projects, he contributed immensely towards setting up the most modern tyre factory of the Dunlop group at Ambattur in Chennai.

During his tenure at Dunlop, he was also in charge of two collaboration projects for setting up tyre factories in  Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Sundar,  as he was fondly called, nurtured the music talents of his wife, Dr. Nirmala and daughter Subhashini which led to the mother and daughter duo getting a PhD.

Sunder was a passionate maker of dolls of deities; an art he inherited from his mother. Come Dussehra, friends and relatives would visit his home to see what he had evolved out of the scrap material which he used to make dolls.
