Obituary: F. J. Vincent, studied in St Bede’s in 1940s

Longtime resident of San Thome, F. J. Vincent passed away on June 23, two months from his centenary. He resided in the Leith Castle Street zone till a few year ago before shifting to a ‘home’.

His funeral Mass is to be on July 2, 11 am at Our Lady of Guidance Church, Lazarus Church Road, R A Puram

Vincent belonged to the 1940s batch of students at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian School, San Thome. During the War years, the campus had to be shut down and classes were shifted to Thanjavur where Vincent continued his school studies.

He ran a well-known travel agency called Speed Birds.

Vincent was closely associated with a Trust that managed the annual feast of saint Lazarus at Our Lady of Guidance Church, Lazarus Church Road.

He was also a long-serving committee member of the Old Bedeans Association (OBA), the alumni group of St. Bede’s School. His colleagues at OBA said that Vincent supported economically poor boarders at his alma mater for many years.

He was also a supporter of many church priests and projects.

A devout Catholic, he would make a monthly pilgrimage to the Annai Vailankkani Shrine in Nagapattinam district.
