Katharoo Fest, a storytelling festival for children is on from August 29 to 31 at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore.

On Friday, August 29, is the inaugural ceremony from 4 – 6 pm. The chief guest is Geeta Ramanujam, a pioneer in the art
of storytelling, versatile storyteller, founder of Kathalaya an organisation that imparts training to aspiring storytellers. She is also an author and has written a few books for children.

There will also be a performance by Geeta Ramanujam followed by a play presented
by a theatre troupe from Mysuru. The play is called Pippi Longstocking and is based
on the books written by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgern showcasing the
adventures of the lead character whose name is Pippi Longstocking.

One of the guests of honour is Prasiddhi Singh, a 13 year old child who is an
environmental activist who has started the Prasiddhi Forest Foundation with the
mission of planting 10 millions trees.

She has already been instrumental in planting fruit forests in Tamil Nadu. She
will speak a few words at the festival in Mylapore.

The inaugural ceremony will be in the school auditorium.

The festival will run from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. On both the days
there will be workshops for parents and teachers and storytelling sessions for
children right through the day.

Children are also invited to tell stories at the festival.
The parents of children who want to tell stories must register on their child’s behalf.

Local storytellers and storytellers from other parts of India will be telling stories and
presenting workshops. There will be book stalls and a display of traditional games, hosted by Kreeda.

A renowned mime artist from Mumbai, Kunal Motling has been invited to perform and
present a workshop at the festival.

The festival is ticketed and is open to the public.
