Rs.12.22 crores is the budget for the complete renovation of Nageswara Rao Park in Luz. A ritual for the launch of this project was held on Friday, Sept. 19 morning at one end of the park in the presence of state minister K. N. Nehru.
Others who were also present for this event were the Chennai South member of parliament, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, city mayor Priya Rajan, Mylapore MLA, Dha Velu, local area councillors and DMK cadres.
This project falls under the Namakku Naame scheme and is being executed by contractors of Greater Chennai Corporation.
We are told the project will be executed by February 2026.
But a design proposed for the park, details of architect and contractor and the rest has not been erected at the work site. A video of the plans was screened at the launch event.
The MLA has promised to share a copy of the new design.
Many months ago, when the first design for this park, created by a private architect was put up inside the park and walkers asked to discuss the features, in the presence of the MLA, changes were suggested.
Some people debated the plan to have food stalls inside the park, saying this would create a mess.
Some said water fountains were nota good idea, since such facilities were not maintained and became useless while others said erecting more covered/built-up spaces defeated the purpose of a green zone. Some said focus must be on sustaining trees and shrubs.
Many people were disturbed at the manner is which a new drain was constructed all along the east side of the park last year, with the intent to address flooding in this zone. This work destroyed shrubs and affected trees and the earth mounds remained unattended.
