Agal vilakkus for Karthigai Deepam . . .

Hawkers on Mylapore’s South Mada Street are smart at responding quick to the needs of people on the eve of a festival or celebration.

Even those who sell vegetables and fruits through the year, put up makeshift tables to sell bommais at Navaratri time or kolam powder during margazhi.

This week, one hawker based near Sai Baba Temple has been an early bird – the woman has displayed heaps of a variety of agal vilakkus.

A dozen of the small sized lamps cost Rs.30 while a single, big size lamp is now quoted at Rs.200.

Most of the lamps appear to be machine-cast products and not hand-moulded ones.
