Obituary: R. Rajendran, key person behind Thaneer Thurai Market and dealer in vegetables, fruits

One of the key persons associated with the once-popular but now demolished Thaneer Thurai Market, Mylapore, R. Rajendran, passed away on Nov.24. He was 63 years old and was a resident of Mandaveli.

Rajendran was the son of the late S. Radhakrishnan, who was a major partner and founder of the privately-owned and managed market located off Royapettah High Road ( near Sri Anjaneya Temple) where a residential high-rise building stands today.

The market was Mylapore’s favourite shopping destination  for vegetables and fruits and is a name that is remembered by old-timers even today.

Rajendran started young alongside his father, helping in channeling the wholesale supplies from Kotwal Chawad in George Town and later, from the Koyambedu Market and in managing the many shops his father owned here.

He managed the cleaning, packing and despatch of supplies to the city’s top caterers and hotels. He was at this post for some 40 years.

After the market closed down, Rajendran managed the business from his residence. The city’s topline caterers like Mountbatten Mani Iyer and Pattappas were his clients.

He is survived by his wife Lalitha, sons Suresh Kumar  and Karthik; daughters-in-law Vijayalakshmi and Sharmila and their families.
