Jaya S. Manyan, a longtime resident of Mandaveli till a few years ago, passed away on Nov.29, 2025. She was 94 years old.
Her son S. Bhanu Kumar said, “Amma was very independent and active till the end. She washed her clothes, never used a washing machine and did this chore on the day she passed away.”
Jaya was known among many in the Mandaveli – Mylapore zone since she was a core member of the once-popular Srinivasa Ladies Club, of which she was treasurer for some terms.
Club members met to learn and recite shlokas and religious texts, arranged annadhanam on special occasions at some temples and undertook temple tours.
Their annual fund-raising event would be the staging of a Tamil play at a sabha hall; it took place at R. R. Sabha till the hall was closed for reconstruction and continued at Mylapore Fine Arts Club (MFAC) hall. Many of these plays were of ‘Crazy’ Mohan.
