‘Reflect’ is the theme of an exhibition of theme-based quilts presented by Quilt India Foundation (QIF) which is on at Sri Sankara Hall, TTK Road, Alwarpet from January 23 to 26. The show is open to all.
Established in 2018, QIF has been bringing the fine art of quilt making to the Indian public. With the first India International quilt show in 2019, the foundation has curated more than 30 shows in various cities.
‘Reflect’ is a collection of quilts received in response to the annual challenge organised by The Square Inch, India’s first quilting studio based in Chennai.
An eight-fabric bundle was given to registrants [82]. The challenge was to make an art quilt on the theme ‘Reflect’ with at least 50% of the surface area being created with the given fabrics. The completed size of the art quilt was to be 20”x20”. 58 completed entries are juried in the show.
The special exhibits include Double wedding ring quilts, Rolling Waves quilts for the first time in India.
The Double Wedding Ring quilt carries a romantic history rooted in symbolism and tradition. Gifted to newlyweds, the design represents two lives overlapping in an eternal, unbreakable bond of love and unity.
The Rolling Waves quilt is a masterclass in optical illusion. Made from straight-edged fabrics, the finished piece radiates the fluid grace of constant motion. A brilliant interplay of colours, precise cutting, and rhythmic rearrangement results in a sea of undulating curves and sweeping tides.
