For Shivaratri, many people visit sapthasthanam temples in Mylapore zone

A unique feature you get to witness in Mylapore zone for Shivaratri are the scenes of groups of people moving to each of the seven temples of lord Shiva, all located within a 2 /3 kms radius.

There are a few who even walk to some of these temples though many have the facility to undertake this midnight prayer circuit on a bike or in an auto.

And so, around midnight of Sunday, February 15, and in the dawn of a new day, Mylapore zone was as alive as it always is during the day.

The biggest crowd was at Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple ( photo above), with people congregating here, taking part in the abhishekam and many staying on while others undertook their ‘pilgrimage’ to the other Shiva temples.

A large posse of police kept close watch to ensure the busy area was secure.

At Sri Veleeswarar Temple, artistes on stage performed bhajans and songs, allowing people to join them in singing. ( photo below shot at Sri Veleeswarar Temple)

At Sri Apparswamy Temple, women took turns to light oil-lit lamps while groups of families sat around in the open, awaiting the abhishekam here.

Volunteers and temple staff prepared a wholesome prasadam at Sri Karaneeswarar Temple. A plate had panchamirtham, pongal and sundal and children were seen enjoying the spread.

People were seen crossing Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai to visit Sri Theerthapaleeswarar Temple on Dr Natesan Salai, Triplicane, which falls under the sapthasthanam temples list.

The HR & CE department has set up large theme sets around the illuminated stage on the open ground off P. S. High School, with concerts and theme presentations for this occasion, through the night and into dawn. ( photo above)
