Under a flat, light blue sky and on a morning when the breeze was light but scarce, the traditional flag went up on the dwajasthambam in the western yard of Sri Kapali Temple, signalling the formal launch of this year’s Panguni festival.
Since 6 a.m., people who are regulars here had found a place around the sthambam even as temple priests and their help set out all that was needed foir the string of rituals that go befire the flag is hoisted.
This was also a morning when many eyes got focussed on the sthambam, which was gleaming in the morning ligght, having been polished for this festival.
The day signals the start of the various processions of the lord on various vahanams.
This Monday, late evening, around 10 p.m. will be, among others, the punnai maram vahanam procession.
