There are lots of groups who get deeply involved in their own ways with the Panguni festival of Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.
One such are members of the Thirumylai Uzhavar Thirupani, mostly made up of women.
Their key focus is on planning, arranging and offering the ‘kalyana seer’ on the evening of the thirukalyanam held inside the temple – this year, it was held on April 1.
The whole exercise is planned to the last detail and is traditional – fruits, clothes, articles and the rest – for the seer are first laid out in a house off a Mada Street, then taken in procession by the women to the temple where they set it out and sit around the seer.
As always, thirukalyanam attracts a big crowd and it was so this year, with people streaming in as early as 5.30 p.m. for the 8 p.m. ceremony.
