Fish hawkers based in kuppams off Sirpi Singaravelar Salai ( Loop Road on the Marina) began a fast inside tents erected off the busy road this morning.
They say that they cannot run their business inside the modern fish market built for them by the GCC because of many shortcomings and that they oppose police action forcing them to go back to the market campus.
During the protest, BJP leader Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan joined the fish hawkers.
Last Sunday, the few hawkers who remained inside the GCC market also came out and like others, sold fish on the pavement and on the road.
Since the announcement of elections to the state Assembly this year, many hawkers who had been cleared from the sands off the Loop Road returned to this zone. But they remained in the sandy area,
However, others who use stalls alongside the residential blocks, hawked on the roadside and this has affected traffic flow.
