Foreshore Estate police say they have arrested one young man who is said to be the head of the gang which has been charged with robbing water taps and sump covers in Mandaveli and Mandavelipakkam the past four weeks.
They made use of the CCTV footage that was provided by people affected by these thefts to confirm the identity of the man they arrested. He is said to be a resident of an area behind Citi Centre mall.
In Mandaveli, a resident lost his bike recently and this loss was also communicated to the police. Raja Street residents have also lost water taps recently.
Residents say that the local police did not act quickly and seem to have doubled their effort only after details of the crimes were shared with the office of the Commissioner of Police.
