San Thome resident and the mother of union minister P. Chidambaram, Lakshmi Palaniappan passed away early on Friday, June 7 at her residence. She had been ailing for sometime.
Chidambaram flew in in the morning to take part in the funeral held later in the day at the Mylapore crematorium.
She is survived by sons P Lakshmanan and P Chidambaram and daughter Uma Narayanan.
Her eyes were donated to Sankara Nethralaya.
Lakshmi was the daughter of Sir Annamalai Chettiar who founded the Annamalai University in Chidambaram and was a firm patron of classical Tamil music, taking part in music fests and funding awards.
