Scores of pilgrims walk down main roads to attend Annai Vailankanni fest in Besant Nagar

Scores of pilgrims walked down the roads in Mylapore that lead south since this morning as they made their way to the Annai Vailankanni Church in Besant Nagar where the feast of Our Lady of Health begins this evening with a flag-hoisting service.

While there was a trickle this morning, it grew into a wave from about noontime.

Pilgrims were seen trudging south on San Thome High Road, R. K. Mutt Road, TTK Road and C P Ramaswamy Road, stopping under shady trees to have a snack or rest a bit.

A smart group of AIADMK cadres in Alwarpet erected a banner which featured the images of  Annai Vailankanni and that of TN chief minister J Jayalalithaa and listing all the party leaders. They also played Christian songs and offered water to the pilgrims at a point near the Alwarpet flyover.

Most people make a vow that they will walk to the shrine at festival time. The feast is celebrated on Sept.8
