Evening of vintage film music . . .

Fans of vintage Tamil film music enjoyed a special evening event that was held at the Arkay Centre in Luz on Friday evening in what is the first in a series that is to be here from time to time.

The idea of the host Dr Prameela Gurumurthy who heads the Music Dept at Madras University is to look at the classical side of Tamil film music of yesteryears through the songs of well known singers.

On Friday, Dr Prameela had at her side Rajkumar Bharati, musician, composer and vocalist. Between the two, they explained their viewpoints as clips of singer T M  Soundararajan or TMS as he was popularly known was played for the audience.

Clips from TMS’ early films to the big hits he sang for heroes MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were played and while Prameela provided the information on the song and its making, Rajkumar looked at the music, the classical touches and the challenges.

Present in the audience was writer-journalist Vaamanan who has written many books on film music and playback singers and directors.
