Obit: Senior advocate N. S. Sivam

Senior advocate N. S. Sivam, a resident of R. K. Nagar passed away on Nov.17. He was 74.

He did his Intermediate (PUC) at Loyola College, B.Sc.(Hons) at Annamalai University and completed his law studies at Madras Law College, Chennai

He enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1964 and joined the office of S. Govind Swaminadhan (Bar-at-Law and ex-Advocate General of Tamil Nadu). He appeared with Swaminadhan in various constitutional matters in the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts in India.

Sivam was held in high regard by the judiciary, the Bar and the public and was noted for his bold arguments on law, say his colleagues.

Sivam handled many big cases spanning constitutional, service, civil and criminal law.

He was appointed as Government Pleader in 1999 and recently completed his 50 years at the Bar.

He was the standing counsel and legal advisor for various organizations and sports bodies including Madura Coats, Indian Oil Corporation, Y.M.C.A., All India Chess Federation, All India Football Federation and Indian Hockey Federation.

Representing the weak and downtrodden was his personal mission, his colleagues said.

They said he appeared in lots of cases for teachers and fought for their promotion benefits.

He made large donations to the Om Thath Sivanandaswamy Ashram at Kattankudy and the Lord Natarajar Temple at Chidambaram. Recently, he supported the renovation of the Natarajar sannidhi at Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.

His funeral was attended by many from the judicial fraternity including Justice S. Mohan, Justice R.Balasubramanian, Justice S. Jagadeesan, Justice K. P. Sivasubramaniam, Justice K. N. Basha, Justice K. Venkataraman, Justice G. M. Akbar Ali and Justice N. Kirubakaran, Judge, High Court.

He is survived by his wife Nalini Sivam.
