Chennai Corporation teams cleared the stalls and stocks hawkers leave behind after their business is done for the day on South Mada Street in yet another effort to discourage the hawkers from occupying the newly-developed pavements here.
The teams were led by an assistant engineer of the local area office. Goods were dumped into trucks after men employed for this operation cleared the pavement of whatever the hawkers had stocked here.
Civic officials said they had told the hawkers in advance not to occupy the pavement space.
Such operations have been carried out often but the hawkers return to business in hours. The relaid pavements of the mada streets have provided a far better space for the hawkers to run their business, making a mockery of the civic project.
