Plea in Madras High Court to declare MRC Nagar as ‘no-hawking’ zone

Raghu Raman, a resident of MRC Nagar has petitioned the Madras High Court , asking Chennai Corporation to declare MRC Nagar as a no-hawking zone.

The court has now given time to the civic body to consider this plea.

Raman says that he has been residing here for over 25 years and over time, what was a fully residential zone has become a hawking zone with hawkers and shops encroaching on pavements and public spaces.

Much of this is evident around the popular Sri Ayyappa Temple and in the school and office zones where food hawkers set up carts and carry on business. Raman says this disturbs the residents and asks Chennai Corporation to rid the nagar of these hawkers.

If this order is implemented then it will be the first if its kind and may encourage other communities to seek similar regulations.
