Expert says many apartments yet to construct rainwater harvesting system

Many apartment blocks and independent houses still do not have a rainwater harvesting system in place and are letting out rainwater on to the roads and streets, thus adding to the flooding problem in public spaces.

This is the observation of rainwater harvesting expert Sekhar Raghavan.

Raghavan says that while supervising RWH works in two streets in Alwarpet and Mandaveli, he checked out a few houses and apartments in the vicinity and found that RWH systems were not executed in many residential spaces.

Says Raghavan, whose Rain Centre is based in Mandavelipakkam and will soon shift to Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, “Water runoff from apartments make some 60% of the water we see flooding on our streets. We have to set up systems to tap it.”
