‘Mayana Kollai’ to take place on Feb. 23

Mayana Kollai – the celebration of goddess Angalamman killing arakan (evil) will take place this Sunday (Feb. 23) on the occasion of Amavasai.

The decorated deity of Angalamman will be taken in a grand procession from Sri Angalamman temple on Mundagakanni Amman Kovil Street to cemetery at R. K. Salai. Men and women devotees, some dressed as Angalamman will follow the procession.

Local youngsters have started putting up pandals and lights for the festival.

Says Karthik, a resident of Mylapore,”Usually, an elderly person takes the form of Kali and re-enacts the killing of arakan. At the cemetery a huge image of the arakan will be made on the ground using mud.”

Devotees also pray for the departed souls in their family, and then offer padayal (food items) for them.

Similar celebration will take place for goddess Angalaparameshwari at the public ground off R.A.Puram.
