‘Incident’ at San Thome cathedral: priest calls newspaper reports, social media posts ‘rumour’

The parish priest of San Thome Cathedral has said that news which was posted on social media and reports in newspapers that a few members of a pro-Hindu outfit had on Friday morning, headed to the cathedral museum and challenged the display of temple sculptures there was a ‘rumour’ and that such an incident did not take place.

Said the statement – It is true that he (Arjun who is said to have led the group) came at about 7:30 am on 28th February 2020 and requested to see the Cathedral Museum. I told him that the museum will be open from 9:00 am. He said that he would return and he then left. That is all that happened. Anything other than this is mere rumor.’

The statement was put out by Fr. G. J. Anthonysamy, parish priest.

But the statement does not explain why the local police were stationed in the campus through Friday.

Mylapore police sources confirmed that they responded to a call made from the cathedral though it was not clear what the complaint was about.
