Mukund Bharadwaj bags second prize in Kala Utsav, national cul-fest. Studies at P. S. Senior

Mukund Bharadwaj, a class XII student of P S Sr Sec School, Mylapore has bagged the second prize in the Kala Utsav national level competition in the classical vocal music category.

Students from 35 states and union territories took part in this Utsav. He won the school and district-level competitions to represent Tamil Nadu at the all India music competition.

He will soon be handed a trophy, medal, certificate of honour and a cash prize of Rs. 20000.

Kala Utsav is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to promote arts in education by nurturing and showcasing the artistic talent of school students at the secondary stage in the country.

Mukund told Mylapore Times that the national level competition was conducted online this year due to the pandemic with live streaming services, watched by judges sitting in different parts of the country.

“I presented Thyagaraja’s Sambho Mahadev and that won me the second prize,” he said.

Mukund has been learning music for the last 10 years and is currently under the tutorship of guru C.R. Vaidyanathan.

He says he will continue to present Carnatic music performances (he has already begun presenting in sabhas), Mukund’s ambition is to become a pilot.
