It was a unique Independence Day, a simple event at the Marina-fronted Nochikuppam, a fishing hamlet.
The flag hoisting got some attention because, as the kuppam headman said, “This is perhaps the first time that a flag has been hoisted on such a day.”
He was not exaggerating, others here said, explaining that more attention was given to hoisting political party flags in each Marina kuppam and few made the effort to celebrate national events.
It was also a morning to launch Tiruvallur Kalvi Cholai ; NGO Roots led by social worker Shirley intends
to run after-school education classes and also educate teens on the dangers of drugs and addiction.
Local councillor Revathy of the DMK , the village headman and a few kuppam people joined the celebration.
The councillor and the headman have promised space to Roots to run its centre.
