Mela atmosphere at Pattinapakkam shoreline as lord Vinayaka images are immersed

There was a mela of sorts at the Pattinapakkam shoreline on Sunday as scores of images of lord Vinayaka were sent down from the main road end, on a rail track to the seashore and then helped along in their immersion.

There were groups singing songs and bhajans, there was a volunteers tent where youths took turns to help on the images to a crane to be dropped into the sea and there was a lunch service centre where donors had prepared food for over 4,000 people – sambhar and curd rice – for the police, the civic staff and the volunteers.

Even as the images were being immersed many broke up and were washed ashore and it needed civic workers on Monday to clear all that was washed up, in bits and pieces.
