MLA attempts to cool tempers of Marina fish hawkers

Mylapore MLA Dha Velu says that he has requested the fish hawkers of Marina Loop Road not to hawk on the road which affects the flow of traffic and that one has to respect a High Court order that asked civic body to clear the encroached hawker stalls.

Velu landed up on Saturday morning on the road’s north end which is the hub of the fish hawking after temper ran high among the women hawkers who said they couldn’t afford to lose out on the high demand for fish on weekends.

That morning, men and women hawkers had spread the fish on the road side and the MLA and his team had to keep asking them to move to the pavement for the day and request local police not to be forceful.

Earlier, GCC workers had cleared the stalls on the west side of the road, and these included bunks and shacks that had been erected on the pavement here.

Velu says the modern fish market. being built down this road will be ready in six months and all hawkers will be accommodated here.

A bench of the Madras High Court had earlier asked GCC to clear all the hawkers on the road and report the action at the hearing due on April 18.
