Keeping alive vidwan Kaaraikudi Mani’s legacy: mridangam classes continue at late guru’s house

Guru Kaaraikudi Mani’s Sruthi Laya Kendra will start a new batch of classes in mridangam learning from August 3.

Ramesh and T. ShyamSundar, senior most disciplines of Kaaraikudi Mani, who passed away recently, will be handling the advanced batches. EPL Muthu Kumaran will be teaching the students of the basic and intermediate-level batches.

Usha, Mani’s niece and S K Srinivasan, Mani’s nephew are now managing the Sruthi Laya Kendra Trust and the music classes.

Said Usha, “Guru Mani has left a clear roadmap ahead for our Trust and we are here to implement his plans. We have curated two-year and three-year courses in mridangam. We plan to send students to all music competitions conducted in sabhas and also train them to become eligible for scholarships.  We will also give them the opportunity to perform in our sabha.  Monthly reviews will be held and students’ progress will be accessed.”

The Trust also plans to have a monthly Laya Samarpanam programme, for the benefit of students. Through this, students will get exposed to Mani’s method (bani) of playing on the mridangam.

The music classes will be held at Mani’s house in Jeth Nagar, R A Puram.

“Classes will be held in the same place where our guru and many veteran musicians practiced,” added Usha.
