The fishers community located off Marina Loop Road staged a protest on Friday morning at the far south end of the road to raise many issues that they say are going to affect their livelihood.
Over 100 men and women took part in this protest held on the sands of Srinivasapuram.
They raised many issues.
- They said that the plans of the state to build a modern bridge connecting lands end in Srinivasapuram / Foreshore Estate and a point in Besant Nagar to ease traffic on the congested San Thome High Road to Adyar side would displace fisherfolks, their boats and nets.
- They said that the state’s plan to construct a posh complex of top-end offices, shops and residences overlooking the Marina would also affect their livelihood.
- They said that over the recent past, the widening of the Marina Loop Road and displacement of fish hawkers had affected their lives.
- They said that the zone must be declared a fishers zone and that all grand plans for this area must be stopped and that the focus must be on improving the fisherfolks lives.
