The owners of apartments in Janani Flats at Manickam Avenue, off TTK Road in Alwarpet, are an unsettled lot.
They vacated their flats in early 2024 for re-development and thieves, who have spotted this abandoned residential block, have been ripping off the electrical lines and plumbing in the blocks and making off with the loot.
In recent weeks, thieves have ripped off the doors and made off with small pieces of furniture that some house owners left behind.
Said one resident, “The apartments have been vacant since early 2024, on account of redevelopment plans with a prominent builder in the city. The talks have not yet been concluded due to discussions on the agreement terms. We have appointed a guard to be on duty at night time. But what upsets us is the vandalism that has taken place during the daytime.”
The residents have now complained to the local police and hope some action by the police will keep off the thieves and stop the vandalism.

Redevelopment is a complicated process and people who do not know the complexity of the process vacate with out even identifying and finalising builder .
Process is to do structural audit to ensure the property is not safe to live by certified authorites like structural co tractor and then create consensus . Some of the tenants been driven out by creating fear and some builders form cartel with one or 2 influential people who are desperate to do the project on their financial need .. i am now part or 2 society scenario is almost same but one did not vacate .other is vacated. We should make the owners know the process and do appropriately else there will be huge financial loss for all or such issues .. in this case the building is close to CM house ..just 50 -80 meters away.
