Over 100 hundred priests who head various Catholic churches across the city took part in the unique Chrism Mass held in the campus of St Thomas Cathedral in San Thome on Tuesday, April 15.
Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore diocese Rev. George Antonysamy led the celebration at which three different oils are blessed.
These oils are then used for various purposes – like anointing priests at ordination time, praying for the sick and at special religious events.
The blessing of the oils took place during the course of Holy Mass held in the open air that evening of the Holy Week.
It was also an occasion for the diocese priests to renew the vows that they took at ordination time.
The cathedral has been prepared for the string of services of the Holy Week which include Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter vigil.
