East Circular Road in Mandavelipakkam is to be re-named as Sirkazhi Govindarajan Road, after the well-known singer of devotional and film songs who also resided in this area.
This news was shared by Mylapore MLA, Dha Velu. In a note, Veku said that the Chennai Corporation council had approved a resolution on naming the road after the singer.
Velu said he had placed the request for a name change before the chief minister. It was acknowledged and the issue was moved to the city council for the formality.
An event to formally rename the road will be held soon.
Govindarajan sang for songs in films starring the stars of his time – MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. His devotional songs in Tamil were also legendary and are still played across the world.
