November 30 marked the first Sunday of Advent in the Christian calendar.
Advent is a season in this calendar that leads to the celebration of Christmas on December 25.
At the St. Thomas Cathedral in San Thome, the first of four colourful and tall candles located alongside the altar, was lit for all the Holy Masses of the day.
Similar acts are carried out in churches, with the second, third and fourth candle lit in subsequent Sundays in December.
