30 people took part in the Mylapore Walk this Sunday morning, August 9; this event was part of the annual Madras Day celebrations being held in August in the city.
Two people, both Mylaporeans – K R Jambunathan and Sridhar Venkataraman – were the resource people and they shared their stories of ‘old’ and ‘new’ Mylapore as the group walked to 10 different points on the designated route.
The Walk started on the banks of the Buckingham Canal, after participants had assembled outside Mylapore Police Station which is itself a heritage space.
Jambunathan and Sridhar took turns to share their stories and they were spiced up with anecdotes that some participants shared.
People from K K Nagar and Perambur were here for the Walk. At least 20 people were seniors – this Walk was intended for seniors.
The group also dropped into the premises of Thyagaraja Samajam near Sri Madhava Perumal Temple, where the shrine of Carnatic music saint-composer is and where concerts are held regularly and then visited the newly constructed Sri Thiruvalluvar Temple, some 200 mts away – both points were not scheduled for this Walk.
The Walk lasted for about two hours and was free. The two resource people offered their time and knowledge for this event.
