Abishekam of ambal at dawn: Aadi pooram celebration at Sri Kapali Temple

The start of the Aadi Pooram celebration of Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore held this  August 14 morning was a quiet event, in which a small group of people participated.

Goddess Karpagambal was taken out in procession from the temple through Sannithi Street, South Mada Street and Tank Street and then placed in the mandapam located inside the tank ( on its steps) on the eastern side.

The special abhishekam that followed was a detailed one and lasted for some 45 minutes.

Then, the ambal was taken into the temple in a procession. Inside, the goddess was decorated with bangles, as part of the valaikappu ritual.  Regulars at this temple streamed in; most of them were women.

The mantapam has been decorated with hundreds of bangles for this occasion.

This evening, at about 5:30 p.m., the ambal will be adorned in sandana kappu (sandal paste) and be seated in the valaiyal pandal.

After 7:30 p.m., the goddess, in a special alankaram, will be taken out in procession through the mada streets.
