Over 200 people staged a protest at the Srinivasapuram end of Pattinapakkam this Tuesday morning against the state governments’s plans to construct a new Secretariat and Assembly in a plot of land in this zone.
The protestors were not only from the local communities but also fishers from areas along the coast in the city.
The community of fishers has been against the government’s plans since the day they were made public.
Their leaders say that these plots originally belonged to local fisher communities, that building a complex which will draw hundreds of vehicles and thousands of people daily will affect day to day life and that security measures will thwart fishing operations.
They want the state to build housing blocks instead in these plots.
