A rundown section of a staircase section collapsed in a residential block in Nambikkai Nagar, one of the neighbourhoods which are set away from Marina Loop Road in San Thome/ Pattinapakkam zone. One person was injured.
This happened on Sept.26.
Now, people who reside here are using a ladder to climb up to reach their houses.
Local area councillor Amirda Varshini said, after visiting the site, “I have requested the minister for housing to provide alternate accommodation for residents in blocks which are in bad shape.”
Officials of the TN Urban Habitat Development Board were also alerted to the mishap and asked to address the issue.
There are eight housing blocks in this nagar. There are four small flats in each block.
A resident here said that the blocks are over 40 years old. “Being located close to the sea, thee blocks are in bad shape now. We need alternate accommodation.”
There is no evidence of annual maintenance of the blocks. The common areas are in a pathetic condition with cracks in walls, cement and chunam layers on walls absent and many spots showing up the brickwork. Roofs of some houses are also in bad shape.
One resident said that they fear the worst if the monsoon is steady and severe.
