Family, well-wishers and artistes got together on September 11 to celebrate the music and career of mridangam maestro Kaaraikkudi R. Mani on his 81st birth anniversary.
At an event got up at Narada Gana Sabha auditorium that evening, the Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani Award for Excellence in Percussion was conferred on the renowned chenda maestro Mattanur Sankarankutty Marar, in recognition of his exceptional artistry and his distinguished contribution to the tradition of Indian percussion.
A memento and a cash award of Rs.50,000, was presented to the awardee by the chief guest, ‘Cleveland’ V. V. Sundaram.
Trustees of Sruthi Laya Kendra, the host — Dr. Rajeswari Sainath, K. Usha, and S. K. Srinivasan — were present.
