First-year MSW (aided course) students of Madras School of Social Work organised an awareness programme on Disaster Preparedness and Government Welfare Schemes for persons with disabilities under the project “Inclusive Disaster Management for Persons with Disabilities.” at Vizhudhugal centre in San Thome on September 18.
Vizhudhugal is a one-stop place for persons with disabilties – offering rehabilitation and support services for this part of the city.
Community members, officials, students and volunteers took part.
S. Srinivasan, district officer for differently abled welfare officer for south Chennai, and Dr. S. Manoharan, consultant at Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Resilience, were the key resource persons.
Students presented a street play that touched on the challenges of discrimination, social barriers, accessibility, and the importance of disability inclusion.
S. Srinivasan provided information on government welfare schemes, benefits, and services available to persons with disabilities and their families.
