Cars, autos and vans have been asked to avoid the two street sections that lead to the east gopuram of Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.
Traffic Police have installed barricades on Ponnambala Vadyar Street, closer to Jannal Bajji Kadai on the south side of the street and near Ambika Appalam store, off North Mada Street, on the north side.
This step has been taken following suggestions from people, mostly residents of this zone, who stop by at the gopuram end and offer prayers, some daily. The curb also reduces congestion at this busy point.
In the past, even VIPs have got their cars driven to the gate and posed problems.
Years ago, a group calling itself Namma Mylapore, used to barricade the street at both ends on pradosham evenings. But in course of time, people disrespected the effort and the volunteers gave up.
Even now, many motorists honk and zip down the street as they can slip through the barricades.
Some temple-goers suggest that all vehicles must be kept off this zone.
