A Sub-Inspector of the state police pulled out his pistol and shot at his son-in-law near a mosque on the busy St Mary’s Road in Mandaveli on Monday night. The young man was seriously injured as the bullet ripped through his abdomen – he is critical in a Adyar hospital.
The officer has been arrested.
Onlookers said that the SI who was seen arguing with his daughter on the road, turned to challenge his son-in-law who had arrived at that spot and then pulled out his pistol to shoot the man.
Two people, a woman walking by and a staff at a fast food stall overpowered the policeman even as he held on to the pistol.
The incident shocked the crowd of this area which has a large number of small shops – just off the Devanathan Street junction.
