Trees planted and garbage issues discussed: At Raja Street, Mandaveli

Tree planting at Raja Street, MandaveliWorld Environment Day was celebrated by the residents of Raja Street, Mandaveli and Chennai Trekkers Club (CTC) on June 5. The event started off with a tree planting session at 6.30 a.m. The CTC volunteers dug up the pits, helped the residents and children plant trees like poongai and golden shower, and even fenced them. About 25 trees were planted at Raja Street, Raja Street extension and TP Scheme Road.

Later a presentation about the ill effects of disposing plastics in the garbage was made by the CTC volunteers. Issues relating to segregated garbage collection and disposal were discussed.

Residents of the street put forth their ideas on the advantages of daily door to door collection of garbage. The concept of 2 bin one bag was introduced and residents were requested to segregate organic waste from other non-decomposable and plastic dry waste. This effort, they hoped, would eventually lead to the removal of garbage bins at street corners.
