Variety of Navarathri events in Mylapore

Here is a listing of all the Navarathri related events and promotionals in the Mylapore neighbourhood.

Theme Kolu at Nandalala
Nandalala is organising a special thematic kolu and poojas for Navarathri. This year’s kolu is themed ‘Sollamal Sollum Lakshmi’, bringing out the various images of goddess Lakshmi in a novel way.
Kanya Pooja and Durga Lakshmi Saraswathi Pooja
will be performed at 4.30 p.m. on Oct 8.
On Oct 12 Panchamuka Vilakku Pooja will be performed at 4.30 p.m.
The kolu and poojas will be held at Nandalala Cultural Centre at 2, 4 Ranga Road Mylapore.
The kolu is open for public viewing from October 8 to 17 between 5.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.
Special viewings for school children are organised on October 11, 13 and 14 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Boutique’s offers
Prashanti boutique has on offer a variety of saris and materials for women for this festival season. It is also offering coupons for every purchase of Rs.2000 which allows you the chance to win gold coins in a lucky draw later on.

Rooms full of dolls
The Mylapore Trio (Aparna, Amarnath and Surendranath) are organising their 58th year Navarathri Kolu at their residence at 5, Third Trust Link Street, Mandavelipakkam.
Their kolu is spread across five rooms and is created on a very grand scale.
This year’s theme is ‘Deiva Dharisanam’. Mylaporeans are invited to visit their kolu but with prior intimation since the place is always packed at Navarathri time.

Fest in Mandaveli
A Navarathri celebration is on at Sri Venkatesa Perumal Devasthanam, Mari Chetty Street, Mandaveli market area from October 8 to 17.
There is Laksharchana for Lord Venkateswara on October 16, 7 a.m. onwards. More details from Vasudevan at 2495 3272.

Music, Dance at Sri Kapali Temple
Carnatic music concerts and dance recitals are being held every evenings at this temple at the Navarathri Mantapam. These will complement the religious ceremonies at the temple.

Special offers at stores
Kamadhenu Co-operative Super Market is having special Navaratri sale. ‘Thambula thattu’ is available for Rs.50.  This pack includes a plate, a blouse piece, comb, mirror, mehendi packet, nutmeg, glass bangles, turmeric powder, kumkum, turmeric and a one rupee coin.
Poori packet, pottu kadala, sugar and beaten rice is also available in small packs.
Fruit bags are sold for Rs.50; each will contain an apple, sweet lime, berry, coconut, 6 bananas and a guava.
Nine varieties of sundal packs in one bag are available for Rs.99.

Karnataka crafts
Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. is organising an exhibition cum sale of handicrafts, handcrafted textiles, jewellery and dolls. The exhibition is on till October 14 at Sri Sankara Hall, Alwarpet. Timed for Navarathri shopping.

Weeklong pujas, concerts
Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home at 66, P. S. Sivasami Salai, Mylapore will be celebrating ‘Navaratri Utsav 2010’ from October 8 to 17.
There will be discourses every morning from 7.30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Music recitals will be organised daily from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. All the senior artistes perform here.
On Oct 16, Saraswathi Pooja will be celebrated with maha abhishekam at 10 a.m.
There will be kolu displayed on all the 9 days.
Mylaporeans can attend all these events.

Concerts at Luz Park
A three-day Navaratri Kutcheri fest is being presented by Sundaram Finance at Nageswara Rao Park, Mylapore from October 8 – 10 at 6.30 a.m. each day.
On October 8 it is 12 year old R Vidya, a Class 8 student of AVM Rajeswari Matric. who will perform. Vidya is accompanied by 11 year old Parur M K Ananth Lakshmi on the violin and 15 year old D Sivaraman on the mridangam.
On October 9, 12 year old V Sreeraman, a Class 8 student of Vidya Mandir, Mylapore presents a flute recital. On the violin is Thiruvedaimarudur K Ganeshan and on the mridngam is 14 year old  Nellai V Sreekrishnan.
It is a Jugalbandhi on October 10 when Sarvajit Krishna and party  take the floor. Sarvajit Krishna and S Subramanyam are on the mridangam and S. Srinath is on the kanjira and S Sasidaran is on the ghatam.

Sangeeth Utsav  at BVB
A “Navarathri Sangeeth Utsav” beginning from October 8 is an initiative of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore. Thee are 27 programmes that include Carnatic vocal and instrumental concerts bhajans and discourses.
At the inaugural function on October 8, Radha Bhaskar presents a recital at 6.30 p.m. The fest ends on October 16.

Gift Tulasi
Parampara, an NGO committed to preserving and upholding Indian traditions has a Navarathri Utsav and Tulasi Danam on at its premises – 46, Kasturi Ranga Road, Alwarpet.
The utsav runs from October 8 to 16. At 6 p.m. every day, there are religious and cultural programmes on these days. The inaugural is on October 7 at 5 p.m.
