Obit: R. V. Sowlee

R. V. Sowlee, who was a senior reporter at The Hindu passed away on August 18. He was 91.

He was born to Venkatarayalu Iyer and Seeta Ammal at Paramakudi in 1921.

He did his school at Paramakudi. He completed his Intermediate and BA graduation from American College. He was married to Maha Lakshmi in 1937.

Sowlee worked at the Madras High Court as bench clerk and after 2 years he did B. L. degree.

He joined ‘The Hindu’ as a reporter in 1947 and retired in 1977 as a senior reporter.

He had held many posts in the Madras Press Club. He got a separate press room allotted at the Madras Airport when he was covering the airport in 1970.

Sowlee has also written many books. He has also translated ‘Ramayanam’ in the Saurashtra language.

His family said he has written a book titled ‘Bukuluas’, which is read at every Sourashtrian marriage. This book stresses the culture of the Sourashtras people.

He was orator and could speak Sanskrit, Tamil, English and German.

He is survived by his son Dr. Amarnath R. Sowlee and daughter Prema Kumari Mothilal.
